SCRUBR

UI/UX | Wireframing | Prototyping

Scrubr was designed to help Airbnb hosts streamline their cleaning process between guest bookings. By assessing host availability and guest timeline, Scrubr suggests local cleaning services or a personalised tasklist for hosts to prep the space themselves. This project was developed independently over a three month window, working from interviews and persona development to hi-fi user testing.

The first step was researching both airbnb and its market to create an overview of the kind of business environment that I would be working within. Below are the major takeaways from this round of competitive research.

Research

The next step became establishing a comprehensive user type with a fleshed out persona that I could reference throughout the process, ensuring that the final product was devoted to their specific needs. In this case the User was an Airbnb host who needed their apartment cleaned between guests in order to maintain good reviews. With this user in mind, I set out to learn as much as i could about them. I did this by conducting multiple interviews with airbnb hosts and property managers to gather data on who they are, what processes they currently use, as well as noting any pain points within those processes. From this data I created a single User Persona that coalesced the demographic info and behaviors of the interviewees.

After developing the persona, I charted Arjun Shah’s Journey Map from a guest checking out to the next guest checking in. This map included the decisions, feelings, and pain points experienced by Arjun at each step of preparing the space

By tracking these steps and understanding what challenges and friction Arjun experienced, I could see what parts of the process needed to be streamlined and tackled by my app solution. In this case, scheduling a time to prepare the space and how to clean most efficiently were the biggest pain points. Additionally I specified key ‘How-Might-We’s to keep in mind as priority action items.

With these HMW’s in mind, I began drafting my Ideal User Flow. This flow was separated into Log-in/Onboarding, Self-Cleaning, and Schedule Service actions. These actions were the foundation of my solution and the rest of the app would be built around them. I kept these flows as concise as possible to minimize opportunities for confusion or redundancy.

User-Flow Development

Now that I had a framework for what my users needed and how to move them through the processes required to succeed, I could get to the fun part: iterating the screens. To keep the visual identity consistent across the whole app I focused on the key screens: Tasklist, Cleaner Selection, Schedule, and Room Hub. Because these screens were the foundation of the app, the organization and actions needed to be simple and intuitive. They would also establish the basic mechanics of the app, that could then be transferred to other screens and actions. To start off I always try to brainstorm layouts by hand. I find that it's easier to get ideas down quickly and more creatively with pen and paper.

Wireframing & Prototyping

I selected the most successful versions of my sketched key screens to convert to mid-fi wireframes using Whimsical. Where I also experimented with a basic palette. Here you’ll see the how the app guides the user through their ideal solutions using a clean and intuitive interface. Again these flows are separated into Log-in/Onboarding, Self-Cleaning, and Schedule Service.

Final Thoughts

After wireframing and creating the bulk of the apps features in mid-fidelity, I feel this project achieved what I set out to do. It has a comprehensive suite of actions that Airbnb Hosts of all levels of experience can utilize to improve/streamline their business. Scrubr gives the User enough control of how they want to tackle problems so as to not force a certain process, while also guiding Users through the most efficient method to solve their problems. For next steps, this project could benefit from fleshing out the auxiliary flows, like Cleaner Account management, Profile tab development, Airbnb/Calendar integrations, as well as a furthering of Scrubr’s brand identity and style guide.

While this is as far as Scrubr goes for now, I look forward to picking it back up again and seeing how much further it can go.
